Tree Removal

I noticed today that around 10 tall lfir  trees have been removed from The Ridgeway in New Road. These trees did not have a preservation order on them,

More and more trees are disappearing from our village as it increases in size.

Can we  add to the village strategic  plan looking into making Lower Shiplake a conservation area to protect more of  our trees and support environmental sustainability iniatives further?

ODC are refusing to put TPOs on the trees at the bottom of New Road, despite the fact that these trees may be at risk due to a government idea to create more housing by replacing housing association bungalows with flats at tenancy expiration. In 2001 when I moved in there were tree creepers, nuthatches & woodpeckers in my garden and close by, all 3 species are now gone. A lonely song thrush is singing away here at dawn and dusk but he cannot find a mate; thrushes are now red listed by RSPB.

I agree also. What is it you suggest be done?

I completely agree with Katharine. There are far too many trees being cut down in Shiplake. It is also the wrong time of the year to cut down so many as it's the height of the nesting season.

I think you are referring to the Neighbourhood Plan. Its not yet complete as far as i know and i dont know if there is any reference to trees. You could raise the matter with the BP steering group or the Parish Council.
Anyone can request a TPO for any tree, although as i think i have pointed out previously the SODC officer has criteria for eligeability eg that there should be a threat to the tree.
The person to contact with a request is Matt Gulliford@southandvale.gov.uk

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I do understand that these trees at The Ridgeway did not have a TPO and could therefore be removed.

However, this does not address the wider problem of how many trees have recently been removed from our village due to new builds and property renovations ( eg Baskerville Lane). I believe there is a need to increase the focus of tree protection across the village and its surroundings as part of the village plan. I am happy to volunteer in this process.

Tree preservation orders were requested for trees on this site before the house was sold. The major trees facing New Rd were given TPOs. They were the ones the Officer considered appropriate.
