Shiplake College - Fencing on Mill Lane
Dear Local Residents
Some of you will be aware that we have installed new fencing around Shiplake College-owned land along Mill Lane, and thank you to those who have got in touch directly to discuss this. Unfortunately, we have had a series of thefts and vandalism on the Barns site and we have needed to install more secure fencing to stop this from happening. In addition, the buildings are not currently in good condition and we have been worried about people accessing the buildings and being hurt.
We appreciate that the hedge clearance required to install the fences is starker than envisioned, but the hedgerow and shrubbery will recover in due course and the new fence line will not be such a noticeable feature. We gave significant thought to the construction of the fence and decided against using fully clad or ugly Herras-style fencing, despite these styles being even more secure.
We take our role in managing the ecology of our estate incredibly seriously and wish to preserve the beauty of the surrounding area. The gates and fencing work currently taking place at the front of the school in order to meet our safeguarding obligations has also been thoughtfully designed with this in mind.

It is disappointing that Shiplake College has not offered a further response.
I am aware that others have contacted them requesting that a hedge is planted in front of the security fencing.
Waiting for nature to take its course is very penny-pinching in the context of the money that has been spent creating an impressive entrance at the front of the college.

I fully appreciate the need to keep pupils and buildings secure, but the new fencing is harsh, aggressive and out-of-keeping with a rural lane. Waiting several years for vegetation to re-grow is not helpful. Please swiftly plant hedging in front of the fence.
