Case of Lyme Disease Caused by Tick

We would like local residents to be aware that a staff member's child was recently bitten by a tick when walking on the Thames Path near Shiplake College. The tick was removed in full and no bull's eye rash ever appeared, however hand, foot and mouth developed the following week and the child was running a fever. A blood test was taken and it was confirmed that the child had tested positive for Lyme disease. Fortunately the treatment should be effective as it was caught early. Whilst not all ticks carry Lyme disease, it is certainly advised to have a blood test if any member of your family is bitten by one. Further details at www.nhs.uk/conditions/lyme-disease/. Pet owners should also be aware as dogs (and cats) can get Lyme disease so please book an appointment with your vet if required.

There have been articles in the media and on tv programmes recently showing that, in many places, ticks are congregating on and underneath wooden benches and picnic tables due to the rapid loss of our natural habitat and people are being bitten and becoming hosts in these settings. Always check wooden benches and tables.
