Decline in hedgehog population

I used to have a very large hedgehog population. Every autumn I would make two or three trips up to Tiggywinkles to leave underweight hedgehogs with them for overwintering. Over the last couple of years my hedgehogs have entirely dissapeared but the fox population has dramatically increased here. There are reports on the internet of how foxes kill hedgehogs http://thehedgehog.co.uk/how-to-help-hedgehogs/dangers/urban-foxes/ . Has anyone else noticed the decline in our hedgehog numbers?

We live in Mill Road and for the first time in 4 years we spotted a hedgehog in the garden last night. I will start putting out some of my dog's dry kibble as they seem to enjoy eating it. A bowl of water too!

Hi Pam and Joanne

According to www.hedgehogstreet, the gap need only be 13x13cm or 5 inches square, other websites say 15x15cms. Sadly, in my garden, this is not the problem, for many years I had dozens every autumn and within the space of a year or two, none! If people can make hedgehog friendly fences that would be wonderful, they need all the help they can get. I understand viruses are to blame for their nationwide decline too

Interested in helping the hedgehogs but what is the minimum size for hedgehog friendly holes in fences? If you set up a group let me know.

I am also very concerned about the hedgehogs disappearing from our gardens. (Not just in Shiplake but I think it is a nationwide problem). I am very keen to encourage people to make gaps in their fences to enable hedgehogs to wander freely. I would welcome any help to start a Hedgehog Support Group! Or is there a local group already?
