Tree Planting on Shiplake River Path

Hi,

Someone has planted a row of Willow trees/hedge about 20m long along the Shiplake path opposite Val Wyatt Marina by the pontoon used by the Marina. I am guessing this was done by the marina to block access to the river and to prevent people from using the land near to the boats moared there as it was busy there last summer.

Does anyone know who owns the land ? As I understand it is a public right of way along that side and while I can understand the marina's actions if for the reasons above, this will quite quickly block views/access to the river - and my guess is if unopposed they will continue to extend the hedge/trees all the way along the bank where boats are moared.

Thanks

A party of teenagers have set up camp tonight next to the boats, on the river side of the hedge, several tents have been erected, the hedge has not deterred them. Edited to say they are drinking there, a bit of a worry.

Dear Philip You have my word the last thing we want is to spoil the view and I would have preferred do nothing at all but we could not leave the problem as it was. We have planted hedging beside the boats and will trim it annually to keep it at shoulder height whilst timing the trimming to maximise the environmental benefit. A number of walkers have mentioned they felt intimidated by the large groups that gathered last summer and they were relieved to see something being done.

Stephen, Thanks for the quick reply. That seems reasonable and definitely preferable to a fence. Will it remain at this length and height? I’m a regular walker along this stretch and while I can understand boat owners’ concern and hope this hedge acts as a sufficient deterrent, I also hope that the path/views can continue to be accessible to all. Thank you

Hi, I walked along the river last week and saw the willows and thought they were a good idea. It will protect the boats that are moored there and still allow walkers to enjoy the river. Good idea Stephen.

Dear Philip. My family own the fields and let the moorings to the marina. We have deliberated over how to protect the boats without spoiling the view as last summer the boats were damaged by drunk teenagers jumping over them. It was a miracle nobody was hurt. After consulting the Thames Path Officer we felt sufficiently substantial fencing would have been unsightly. Once the willows have rooted we will trim the hedge to maintain the view.
